Kassandra Maldonado Becerra

Kassandra Maldonado Becerra was born is San Diego but lived in Playas de Rosarito, Mexico and Temecula before coming to Seattle when she was thirteen. Kassandra loves animals. She is fourteen..

I have learned about writing poetry that it doesn’t have to rhyme or to be long or short and that it can be about anything. What I like about reading poetry is that it can make you laugh or cry and it’s interesting in a way that you can learn about what people feel or think. My favorite poem is the “I am” poem because it talks about where I’m from and it shows part of who I am.

My Life

My life is like the clouds
Sometimes white with the sun shining
And sometimes black crying
Tears of water.

My life is like a flag
Sometimes not moving,
Sometimes moving with the help
Of the wind.

My life is like a butterfly
As delicate as her wings,
That when you grab her by the wings
You can destroy them.

My life is like a plant,
It needs love and care
To grown.

My life is like a car,
It needs gas to run.

I am

I am
From Playas de Rosarito,
From mariachi, reggeton, pop,
And hanging out with Friends.

I am
From the words
Virgen de Guadalupe, libertad, respeto,
From the feeling of sadness, and happiness.

I am
From the promise of friendship and love
From se tu misma, “Don’t be a follower.”

I am
From roads of dirt, gallos, chickens, healthy
And sick dogs in the streets.

I am
Mexican, American,
Feliz de serlo.
